Networks are categorized by their geographic scope. The two most common types are LAN and WAN.
LAN (Local Area Network)
A network confined to a small area, like a single building, home, or office. It is usually fast and privately owned.
WAN (Wide Area Network)
A network that spans a large geographical area, connecting multiple LANs. The Internet is the largest WAN.
Troubleshooting Tip
If you can print to your local printer but cannot load a website, your LAN is likely fine, but your WAN connection (internet) is down.
